Subject: 3/3/11 meeting Taormino Property 370 Panamint Comments

Dear Storey County Planning Commissioner:

We are Highland Ranches property owners, Steven and Catherine Hinkle at 500 Highland Rd, who used to have a beautiful view of Mount Rose and the Sierras and now have to look at the ugly, distorted antennas mentioned in the Public Notice you have sent out.

We love our community and surroundings, including the wild horses and farm/ranch-like rural areas with the rich, historic Geiger Grade corridor.  Why anyone would even consider to allow someone to erect something so opposite to the historic and rural community history we have in the Virginia City Highlands and Highland Ranches, we cannot understand.

We signed many documents when we purchased our property which explained what we could and could not do, and erecting an antenna over 45 foot above grade was listed as something we could NOT do.  When the Taormino’s purchased their property, they signed similar documents and was aware of the local ordinances as well.   If the Taormina’s want to have such high antennas for their ‘hobby’, then they should purchase property at another location where there are no ordinances against such things.

We are also very concerned about our safety and the safety of our neighbors should we ever have a fire.  We believe that in the case of a fire, the helicopters and airplanes that would become necessary to drop property and life saving fire retardant would choose not to save our or our neighbor’s property because of the danger of the high antennas becoming entangled in their equipment.

You have listed a walk-through of the Taormina’s property prior to the main meeting, however to get a true perspective of how these antennas affect the Highlands, you should have a walk-through of the surrounding neighbor’s property to see what it looks like from our perspective.  We invite Storey County Planning Commissioners who want to see the effect to come to our home at 500 Highland Rd and look out at what was once a ‘million dollar view’ as one of our relatives said when visiting.   Sadly, it is no longer a ‘million dollar view.’

Please consider this email as a serious complaint AGAINST this variance.  We do not approve.

Sincerely,

Steven R. Hinkle        Catherine A. Hinkle
